Wastewater Treatment Plant
Bristol Borough’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) treats wastewater produced by domesticresidences (households) and industrial customers located within Bristol Borough’s public sewer system and customers from surrounding areas. The treatment process operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Last upgraded in 1976, the plant has been undergoing renovations and capital improvements since early 2007 to maintain the operation process and ensure a high quality effluent upon discharge.

Bristol Borough’s wastewater treatment process has a hydraulic capacity rated at 2.7 million gallons daily (MGD). On average, a daily flow of 1.8 to 2.0 million gallons of wastewater is treated and processed. The WWTP is a class B subclass 2 system which means it processes more than 1 and less than 5 MGD and uses a fixed film biological treatment process for treatment. The treatment process involves three stages; primary, secondary and tertiary treatment.

Primary treatment removes all large and inorganic debris, oils and grease, and all settleable biosolids. The biosolids are then treated by anaerobic digestion in primary and secondary anaerobic digesters. The secondary process utilizes trickling filters (4) in sequence with rotation biological contactors (6) as its secondary treatment which neutralizes organic, biological and chemical contaminants in the wastewater. After the wastewater has been treated and cleansed, it enters the final stage of treatment (tertiary) which is disinfection by chlorination, killing any residual pathenogenic bacteria. After treatment, the water is discharged to the Otter Creek section of the Delaware River which is the receiving waterway.

The plant does a tremendous job treating the influent wastewater. The plant’s biological process is extremely efficient and knocks out 99% of suspended solids and 97% to 98% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) on average and consistently meets the perimeter of its N.P.D.E.S. Permit. The high quality effluent that is produced keeps our river healthier, or water cleaner making our environment safer.

Maintenance and Repair
  • The Authority is responsible for repairs to the main sewer line running parallel to the street and the property owner is responsible for repairs for the lateral sewer line running from the main to the building.
  • If a sewer problem arises in the sewer lines and it is determined by the officials of the Bristol Borough Water and Sewer Authority to be in the main sewer line, the Authority shall make all necessary repairs to the main line.
  • If a sewer problem exists and it is determined by the Bristol Borough Water and Sewer Authority officials that the problem exists in the lateral sewer line then the property owner shall correct the defect in the line at his sole cost.
  • The Authority shall inspect the repair work to insure compliance with Water and Sewer Authority Regulations.  If the cause of the sewer problem is unknown, the Authority shall enter into an agreement with the property owner  as follows:
  • The property owner shall take the necessary steps to have the sewer line in front of his property excavated in order to determine the nature of the sewer problem. The line shall be inspected by the appropriate officials of the Bristol Borough Water and Sewer Authority and if the officials determine that the defect exists in the main sewer lines, then the Authority shall bear all costs incurred in the excavation and repair of the line. If the Authority officials determine that the defect exists in the lateral line, then the property owner shall bear all expenses incident to the excavation and repair of the lateral sewer lines.
  • A plumbing permit is required to repair or replace a sewer lateral.
  • In addition to the cost of the permit, there is a $500.00 escrow required for opening the sidewalk and a $1,000.00 escrow required for opening the street. The escrow amount will be returned upon written request after the job is completed and the work on the sidewalk and/or street pass inspection.
